Natural Source of anthocyanins:
Anthocyanins can be found in numerous plants, but high levels are present in acai, aronia, backcurrant, blueberry, bilberry, cherry, red grape raspberry, strawberry, and purple corn. Examples of anthocyanins include cyanidin, delphinidin, peonidin, malvidin along with more than 400 other anthocyanins.
Function of anthocyanins in plant:
Plants produce anthocyanins for many different reasons. One role for anthocyanins is that they will protect the plant cells against damage caused by UV radiation. Another consideration is that the vibrant colors of reds, blues, and purple colors come from anthocyanins. Bright colors are known to attract different animals including insects that could help contribute to pollination.
Health benefits of anthocyanins:
Cardiovascular: A benefit of anthocyanins has been the possible role in reducing atherosclerosis. In addition, anthocyanins can reduce oxidative stress and free radical damage which is process known to contribute to heart disease. There is also evidence suggesting anthocyanins can prevent high blood pressure.
Anti-inflammatory: Studies have shown a reduction in inflammation by inhibiting cytokines, chemokines, adhesion molecules as well as enzymes involved inflammation like cyclooxygenase (COX), lipoxygenase (LOX).
