Irritable bowel disease (IBD) includes ulcerative colitis and Chron’s disease. A consequence of colitis and Crohn’s is an increase in molecules that cause inflammation.
The current drug options for IBD include amino acid salicylates, steroids, immune modulators, antibiotics, and anti-TNF-alpha drugs.
Unfortunately, sometimes people with IBD might need another option to help control their ulcerative colitis. One option suggested by researchers it the use of resveratrol as it can decrease inflammation which is the major problem in IBD.
Resveratrol is a polyphenol that is found in grapes with many reported health benefits.
Another clinical trial recently reported the benefits of resveratrol in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The results of a recent clinical trial with resveratrol for controlling symptons of ulcerative colitis were published in the journal Archives of Medical Research.

Here are the details of the study:
– Study design: Double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial
– Patients: 25 people received resveratrol while 25 received placebo.
– Resveratrol: 500 mg of trans-resveratrol was taken daily.
– Length of study: 6 weeks
Here are the results of resveratrol on ulcerative colitis:
– C-reactive protein (CRP) decreased with resveratrol
– TNF-alpha decreased with resveratrol
– NF-kb decreased with resveratrol
– The IBD questionnaire improved with resveratrol
Before Resveratrol | After Resveratrol | |
hs-CRP (ng/mL) | 4764.25 | 2584.5 |
TNF-α (pg/mL) | 19.7 | 17.2 |
NF-κB p 65 (+OD) | 0.19 | 0.1 |
IBDQ-9 Score | 32.72 | 47.64 |
SCCAIQ Score | 12.34 | 8.14 |
The researchers of this study had this to say about resveratrol and colitis:
The current study has several strengths including high participation rate (>90%), the moderately low drop-out rate, successful blinding, its double-blind, placebo-controlled design, and assessment of NF-kB activity in PBMCs to find a mechanism of action for resveratrol effects on inflammatory cytokines in the body.
Take away message:
The authors of this clinical trial report a significant improvement in inflammatory markers with resveratrol (500 mg) after just 6 weeks in patients with ulcerative colitis. Another study has reported that resveratrol improves markers of insulin and blood sugar in diabetes patients. Future clinical trials will need to be longer to determine if resveratrol can maintain or further improve markers of inflammation in patients with IBD.
